Penetrating chest trauma

Penetrating chest trauma

This is a 27 year old man who was accidentally shot in the chest by a workmate with a nail gun. The (pretty long) nail is indicated by the arrow. The ED physician ordering the CXR was expecting to find a pneumothorax, haemothorax and/or pulmonary haemorrhage, but none of these was evident. Luckily, CT showed that the nail was stuck in an intercostal space, and had not penetrated the pleura.
