Malpositioned subclavian line

Malpositioned subclavian line

Portable ICU chest radiograph performed following insertion of a right subclavian venous line shows that the line has been advanced up into the internal jugular vein instead of down into the SVC – the tip of the line is indicated by the arrow. This requires repositioning as one of the potential complications of  a malpositioned catheter like this is thrombosis of the cerebral sinuses, which can be fatal.
