Bowed femur

Bowed femur

The bizarre appearance of this 35-year-old patient’s left femur is caused by bowing due to previous osteomyelitis. Other causes of bowed long bones include Paget’s disease (where the underlying bone would look much more abnormal than in this example) and skeletal dysplasias such as osteogenesis imperfecta and some forms of dwarfism.
