Avascular necrosis – subchondral collapse

Avascular necrosis – subchondral collapse

AVN. One of the consequences of advanced avascular necrosis in the femoral head is that the subchondral bone becomes weakened and can allow the cortex to sink, as in this case (arrows – note the abrupt depression in the normally smooth cortex). This is called subchondral collapse.
